NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Beginning with the fall semester, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will be partnering with Regents Academy of Nacogdoches in implementing an after-school orchestra program for Regents students.
Under the direction of Gene H. Moon, director of orchestral activities at SFA, students in fourth through 12th grades will have the opportunity to study violin, viola, cello and double bass and perform in concerts throughout the school year.
"The orchestra program at Regents will be a way to bring string instruments to a larger audience of young learners," said Moon. "It will whet the appetite for those students and create an avid desire to excel in music."
Citing statistical evidence that proves children who study a musical instrument excel in reading, mathematical problem solving, scientific research and other areas of fine arts, Regents administrator Mary Ann Bentley said she considered musical training to be a vital enrichment to a student's academic career. "What better way to endorse classical, Christian education than through a viable strings program?"
The orchestral students will have weekly classes with Moon, who will be assisted by SFA strings education students.
The partnership provides a wonderful opportunity for both sets of students, explained Moon. The Regents students will learn to play string instruments, and the music education students will gain valuable hands-on experience. "We are excited to be a part of the first in-school orchestral program in Nacogdoches."
