SFA Chamber Orchestra Concert Features Pianist Andrew Parr

Sylvia Bierschenk - November 7, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Pianist Andrew Parr, professor of music at Stephen F. Austin State University, will perform Frédéric Chopin's "Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor" during the SFA Chamber Orchestra's concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in Cole Concert Hall. Pianist Andrew Parr

Gene H. Moon, the orchestra's director, said he is looking forward to conducting the work. "As a pianist myself, I have always loved Chopin's piano concertos. It is a privilege to be able to conduct this one with such a fine pianist as Andy Parr."

Since joining the SFA faculty in 1983, Parr has performed extensively in solo, chamber and concerto settings. He has previously performed Chopin's Second Piano Concerto with the San Antonio Symphony and the Orchestra of the Pines. Other highlights include a performance of Aaron Copland's "Piano Concerto" with the Belgrade Philharmonic in the former Yugoslavia, Beethoven's "Piano Concerto No. 4" with the Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra, Prokofiev's "Piano Concerto No. 3 in C" with the Orchestra of the Pines and Longview Symphony and Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy" with the Orchestra of the Pines.

Parr began studying piano at the age of five. He furthered his education at Kent State University, at the Hochschule fur Musik and Darstellende Kunst in Vienna as a Fulbright Scholar, and at Yale University where he earned his master's and doctoral degrees.

The orchestra will also present Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5 in C minor, " a work Moon chose because of its popularity with both musicians and the general audience.

"This work is a staple in the orchestral literature, and every orchestra student should have the experience of preparing and performing it," Moon said. "Additionally, the theme upon which the first movement is set is probably one of the most highly recognized pieces of classical music. Many people would choose it if asked to hum a portion of orchestral music."

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music and is a part of the 2007-2008 Orchestra Series sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and the Wedgeworth-Wright Endowment for the Arts.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS, or purchase tickets on-line.
