NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Ludwig van Beethoven will be featured in the Orchestra of the Pines' "Immortal Romantics" concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
The regional symphony orchestra, composed of SFA faculty, students and guest orchestral musicians, will present Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, one of the composer's "most intriguing works," said Gene H. Moon, the orchestra's director. "It portrays man's resignation towards fate and is full of many familiar melodies, including the second movement's famous horn solo that embraces life and beauty."
Jennifer Dalmas, SFA assistant professor of music and the orchestra's concertmaster will be the featured soloist on Beethoven's violin concerto.
"Arguably one of the first major concertos for the violin, its brilliance and virtuosity is blended beautifully with subtle nuances," said Moon.
"Jennifer is an outstanding musician. Her technical prowess over the violin is incredible to watch as she makes each note sing in this concerto."
Dalmas joined the SFA faculty in 2003 after earning her master's and doctoral degrees in violin performance from Florida State University. While in Florida, she performed with the Tallahassee, Jacksonville and New World Symphonies.
Dalmas performs with several period orchestras, including the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra and the Apollo Ensemble. She has performed solo repertoire and various concerti with orchestras in the United State and Europe, and as part of the Promising Artists of the 21st Century program has given recital and master classes both in the United States and Central America.
As a member of the Hachidori Piano Trio, she has been a semi-finalist in the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and has performed the Beethoven "Triple Concerto" with orchestras in the United States, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts, School of Music and Orchestra Series. It is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and the Wedgeworth-Wright Endowment for the Arts.
