NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - An Irish Christmas concert and G.F. Handel's "Messiah" top the list of holiday events offered by the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts Thursday, Nov. 29, through Friday, Dec. 14.
The first holiday performance of an SFA group will be "Sounds of Nacogdoches" presented by the SFA Madrigal Singers at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Fredonia Hotel as part of the Nine Flags Festival. The choir will provide musical entertainment during dinner.
Also as a part of the Nine Flags Festival, SFA's Original Cast will present "Christmas in the Movies" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30; at 2 and 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1; and at 2 p,m. Sunday, Dec. 2. The cabaret-improvisation troupe from the SFA School of Theatre will be performing holiday songs and scenes from Hollywood films. All performances will be in the Masonic Hall, 129 N. Fredonia St.

The College of Fine Arts and University Series will present Celtic fiddler Eileen Ivers in "An Nollaig - An Irish Christmas" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.
Ivers, the fiddling star of the original "Riverdance," and her band, Immigrant Soul, will perform traditional Irish songs, original tunes and holiday favorites. Irish step dancers and SFA's Madrigal Singers will join Ivers for part of the program.
"This will be a wonderful event for the entire family," said John W. Goodall, SFA associate dean of the College of Fine Arts. "What a great way to welcome the holidays!"
The Percussion in the Pines concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Cole Concert Hall will include "holiday songs with a percussive twist," said Scott Harris, SFA director of percussion studies.
The SFA Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band will perform familiar carols, popular tunes and contemporary holiday arrangements. The concert also includes a toy drive sponsored by the SFA Percussion Department, Phi Boota Roota and the Canterbury Association.
The SFA Trombone Choir's concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Cole Concert Hall will include performances of "We Three Kings," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," and "Silent Night." The musicians will perform in quartets and as a large ensemble.
The SFA combined choirs, Chamber Orchestra and the Nacogdoches Community Chorus will present Handel's "Messiah" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.
This is always one of our most popular concerts," said Diane Flynn, Box Office manager. "Typically, the auditorium is full of East Texans eager to hear the popular oratorio and participate in the choir's traditional carol sing-along."

East Texans looking for visual inspiration for the holidays might enjoy "Russian Icons from the Collection of Mary Moody Northen" currently on exhibit in Griffith Gallery, Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus.
The exhibition, which includes sacred Russian images from the 16th through 19th centuries on loan from The Moody Mansion Museum in Galveston, runs through Sunday, Feb. 10.
