NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Wind Ensemble in concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.
Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands and the ensemble's director, said the program will include a "blend of old and new."
The featured work of the concert will be Ingolf Dahl's "Sinfonietta."
Written in 1961, the piece features an offstage trumpet trio and "exploits all the different sounds available in the modern concert band," Allen said.
The ensemble will also perform Percy Grainger's "Duke of Marlborough Fanfare," a march by Gabriel Musella and a movement of Gabriel Faure's Requiem featuring oboist Ryan Jackson, Nacogdoches junior. In addition, Brett A. Richardson, SFA assistant director of bands, will guest conduct "Smetana Fanfare" by Karel Husa.
David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands, will conduct Donald Grantham's "Starry Crown."
"Grantham wrote this piece at the suggestion of Kevin Sedatole, former director of the Lumberjack Marching Band and current director of bands at Michigan State University," explained Campo. "It was written in honor of the career of John Whitwell, director of bands at SFA from 1987 to 1993."
SFA's premier concert band, the Wind Ensemble has performed regularly for convention-clinics of the College Band Directors National Association and the Texas Music Educators Association. The Texas association has again invited the group to perform in San Antonio for the 2008 convention to be held in February.
