NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Reservations are now being accepted for a bus tour to the Houston Museum District on Friday, Nov. 2, sponsored by the art history area of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art.
Participants will be able to visit The Menil Collection, The Museum of Fine Arts, the Contemporary Arts Museum, and Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.
"Each of the museums offers interesting exhibitions, but of particular interest are the Bruce Nauman show at the Menil and the avant-garde jewelry and Pampeo Batoni shows at The Museum of Fine Arts," said Jill Carrington, SFA associate professor of art history and the trip's coordinator.
At The Menil Collection, tour participants may view "A Rose Has No Teeth: Bruce Nauman in the 1960s."
According to the museum's Web site, the varied media in this exhibition--including performance, conceptual photography and sculpture--are representative of Nauman's early years in which he established himself as one of the most innovative artists of his generation
At The Musem of Fine Arts, "Ornament as Art: Avant-Garde Jewelry from the Helen Williams Drutt Collection" contains 720 pieces of jewelry dating from 1963 to the present. Over 175 artists from 18 countries are represented.
"Pompeo Batoni: Prince of Painters in Eighteenth-Century Rome" is the first comprehensive presentation of the painter's work in 40 years. He was one of Rome's most popular painters of portraits and history paintings, according to the museum's Web site.
Other exhibitions at The Museum of Fine Arts include "Oudry's Painted Menagerie: Portraits of Exotic Animals in Eighteenth-Century Europe" and "Gráficas Políticas: Mexican Prints, 1900 - 1950."
Participants may also want to visit the Contemporary Arts Museum to see "Mary Heilmann: To Be Someone" and "Perspectives 158: Kelly Nipper" as well as "Women's Tales: Four Leading Israeli Jewelers" at the Museum of Contemporary Craft.
