Geology Courses

Overview

Students wishing to choose geology as a major should consult an adviser within the department early in their careers. In order to prepare students to achieve the goals of the discipline of geology and to meet society's challenges to geologists, curricula courses within the Department of Geology are designed to:

  1. give students an understanding of the methods of science and the fundamentals of earth science as they relate to the physical environment and our dependence on earth resources such as minerals, rocks, fuels, and water;
  2. give prospective science students the fundamentals of geology as a foundation for other science studies;
  3. provide training in geology and related earth sciences as an area of specialization for prospective elementary and secondary school teachers;
  4. provide geology majors with a broad foundation in geology for future professional work or graduate study; and
  5. allow students to choose an "option" relevant to a particular field of specialization in geology.
