Phonejacks raise funds, Students connect with donors

Ever wonder where the funds come from to furnish classrooms and labs with new, up-to-date equipment? Phonejacks is largely responsible for keeping SFA updated with emerging technology and qualified professors.

Phonejacks was created in 1992 by the development office to raise funds for SFA through its campaign called the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund is a yearly campaign that raises donations for seven of the colleges on campus and 31 of the academic departments. It is a donor-directed program in which donors have the choice as to what they would like their donations to benefit.

"We try to help every aspect of the University,” April Smith, director of Phonejacks and SFA alumna, said. “However, a large percentage of money we raise goes towards academics on campus.”

Calling sessions are from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and Phonejacks raise an average of $2,300 a night and $12,000 a week.

"The amount raised fluctuates,” Smith said. “In the fall I estimate we will raise about $25,000 a week.”

Phonejacks began in Gibbs Hall with one caller and one phone per room, and is now located in the Kennedy Auditorium with automated calling.

Phonejacks employs an average of 35 students a semester. During calling sessions, students call alumni and parents to ask for contributions to SFA.

"I have worked for Phonejacks for a year and a half,” Ada Murray, Houston junior, said. “I enjoy it because when I see new things on campus, I know that Phonejacks helped to get it.”

Phonejacks has been responsible for providing such things as new equipment for labs and playground equipment for the Early Childhood Development program. It has also helped with funds for student travel and faculty development.

"I think I have a group of dedicated students that attempt to better the university but don’t always get the recognition they deserve,” Smith said.

Murray said this year’s efforts seem to be successful so far.

"Every year is different but it seems like we are raising a lot of money this semester,” Murray said.
