Stephen F. Austin State University has received a $500,000 grant for scholarships from the Texas Pioneer Foundation in San Marcos. Commercial Bank of Texas, N.A., is a local partner with Central Texas Student Loan Corporation, a subsidiary of the foundation that helps community lenders develop student loan programs and supports repayment incentive programs for students who received loans.

"We are pleased to be able to support Stephen F. Austin State University in its commitment to enhance the financial aid available to students," said Fred Markham, foundation president.

The SFA Office of Financial Aid will award 12 $5,000 scholarships for the 2005-2006 school year. The following year, 14 new scholarships will be awarded.

To qualify, entering freshmen must graduate from an accredited public or private high school with a minimum SAT score of 1200 or ACT score of 26. Recipients can continue to receive the funds provided they earn 24 or more semester hours of academic credit by the end of the spring semester with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

"By attracting top students to SFA, we hope to encourage other high achievers from the same communities to consider us when making their education choice," said Mike O'Rear, SFA director of financial aid.
