SFA Health Clinic Bills Your Health Insurance

Just like your health care provider at home, the SFA Health Clinic medical practitioners accept some health insurance plans. (See list below) But if you do not have health insurance, you will still be seen at no charge.

How the clinic is funded and why insurance billing helps you?

The SFA Student Health Clinic receives a portion of the student services fee. This money covers the co-pay or deductibles you would normally have to pay out-of-pocket. This fee ensures currently enrolled students access to the clinic, regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

In order to keep this clinic as an accessible benefit to our student population, insurance billing was instituted in 2013. Billing insurance allows the Student Health Clinic to continue with the current level of services in spite of increasing costs. It also allows us to provide more services on-site, since we may be able to be reimbursed by insurance for the costs of these services.

How does it work?

Each time you come in, a front office employee will ask for your health insurance card and your student ID card. They will also confirm that you are a currently enrolled student and eligible for our services.

No student will have to pay any co-pay or deductibles for our clinic because those fees are covered by your student service fee.

If you have health insurance, the Student Health Clinic will file on your insurance and accept the payment made by that health insurance companies for office visits, as payment-in-full. You will not receive any other bill for those covered services.

If you do not have health insurance, the Student Health Clinic will still see you without a charge. You too, will not receive any other bill.

Either way, most regular visits will not require any money. There are a few exceptions in which the clinic will need payment, for example; a few lab tests and some injections may have a charge.

Health insurance is important!

While your care at the health clinic is available whether or not you have health insurance, injuries and after-hours illness is not uncommon while in college. We strongly encourage you to be covered by health insurance, as emergency room visits, urgent care visits, and hospital stays can be extremely costly. For that reason, we are pleased to partner with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas to provide an affordable insurance option for our students. Information can be found at this Academic Health Plans link. Any questions about this coverage should be directed to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas using the information contained on the website below.
