Dr. Robert Z. Selden Jr. - Research Associate Educational Background: Texas A&M, 2013, PhD Anthropology Research/Areas of Interest: Caddo; Archaeology; Radiocarbon, INAA Office: Mission Dolores

Dr. Selden is a United States Marine Corps veteran that comes to the Center for Regional Heritage Research from Texas A&M University where he recently completed his Ph.D., specializing in Caddo archaeology. Selden is a native Texan, and has worked and volunteered on a variety of cultural resource management (CRM) projects throughout the state, to include recent data recovery efforts at Sierra Diablo Cave funded by National Geographic, and at the Gault site-a nationally famous Paleoindian site-funded (in part) by the National Science Foundation, as well as numerous testing and survey projects.

His current research is focused upon the origins of Caddo culture (the transition between Woodland and Caddo populations), where he is presently focused upon delimiting the temporal period wherein the ancestral Caddo population began to intensify upon corn/maize production (using radiocarbon), defining inter and intra-Caddo interaction via prehistoric ceramics using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), the development and test of a regional model of ceramic petrofacies (ceramic provenance), three-dimensional geometric morphometrics (shape analysis) of Caddo ceramics, and the application of geographic information systems (GIS) to archaeological problems.

Dr. Selden is a member of the Council of Texas Archaeologists, where he sits on the Governmental Affairs Committee, and the Texas Archeological Society, where he takes an active role in the Education and Academy Committees. He also holds membership in the Society for American Archaeology, the Texas Academy of Science, the Caddo Conference Organization, and the East Texas Archaeological Society.
