Phi Alpha Theta Mission

We are a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.

History of Phi Alpha Theta

Phi Alpha Theta was founded in 1921 at the University of Arkansas for students who showed excellence in the study of history. Today, there are more than 350,000 members in 860 chapters.

Chapter Info

The Eta Sigma chapter of Stephen F. Austin State University was founded in 1961 and has over six hundred members. The activities of this chapter are numerous and diverse. We have co-sponsored history conferences, lectures, and receptions. Our student membership has presented papers at various professional conferences. Students have also participated in a variety of activities such as tours, picnics, and meetings. Many members also participate in SFA's History Club.The Eta SIgna chapter adheres to the Society's mission statement and promotes the chapter through activities, free tutoring sessions for students in History, and community serives.

Membership in Phi Alpha Theta

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students must complete at least 12 semester hours in History (4 courses), a GPA of at least 3.1 in History, a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. Membership is not limited to History majors.

Graduate Students

Graduate students should have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their Master's Degree, have a GPA of better than 3.5, and have completed approximately 30% of the residence requirements for the Master's Degree.

Faculty Members

Faculty members above the rank of Instructor who teach History automatically qualify, pay the same induction fee, and receive the same membership privileges. There is a one-time fee for lifetime membership (currently $50 at SFA), which includes four issues of the quarterly journal The Historian.

Phi Alpha Theta members are encouraged to apply for the scholarships awarded to history majors through the Alumni Association of Stephen F. Austin State University. These include the Jack Raines McKinney Scholarship, the Red and Thelma Jagoe Harling History and Political Science Scholarship, the Sara S. Snyder History Scholarship, and the James L. Nichols History Scholarship. In addition, the History Department presents an annual "Outstanding History Student" award at the Spring Awards banquet.
