The Stephen F. Austin State University History department consists of seventeen tenured and tenure track faculty, as well as several part time, modified, or temporary instructors. Of the full-time permanent faculty, five are full professors, four are associate professors, and eight are assistant professors. All seventeen have doctorates, and nine are tenured. The faculty teach a wide range of courses, but, generally speaking, seven specialize in European history, eight in American history, one in Asian history, and one in Latin American history.
In terms of service, teaching, and scholarship, the History department compares very well with other History departments in the state. There are two Regents Professors, one past president of the Faculty Senate, and three administrators of specialized programs. The department has a well-deserved reputation for promoting academic rigor and integrity in the classroom, and one member recently received the Liberal Arts College 's Teaching Excellence Award. As for scholarship, four professors have published monographs with respected presses in the past several years, and the remaining faculty are all active in editing books, attending conferences, and writing articles.
