SFA's Eta Sigma chapter of
Phi Alpha Theta, the international history honor society, received the 2010 Best Chapter Award in our enrollment division (Division IV: 10,001 to 15,000 students). Only six “Best Chapter” awards are distributed each year across the entire country. The History Department is very proud of all the local chapter members and especially the chapter’s officers for the hard work that made this award possible. Officers for the 2009-2010 academic year were Cassandra Bennett, president; Adam Grimes, vice president; Meredith May, secretary; Kaitlin Wieseman, treasurer; Spence Gaskin, historian; and Emily Curry and Greg Marshall, event coordinators. Dr. Dana Cooper, Assistant Professor of History, was the faculty sponsor of the chapter in 2009-2010.

The History Department congratulates alumna Sarah Sampietro, the 2011-12 recipient of the S. A. and Frankie Zou Kerr Award, which is given each year to SFA’s outstanding Liberal Arts graduate. After graduating Summa Cum Laude (with a perfect 4.0 GPA) in December 2011, Sarah got married, and is living in Lubbock with her husband Justin, who is completing his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University. Sarah is currently working as a teacher's assistant at a Montesorri early childhood development center. She is also tutoring in Spanish. She will be moving this summer to Madison, Wisconsin, where Justin will begin work on a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin. Sarah is interested in becoming a middle or high school history and/or Spanish teacher, preferably at a private school.
