Sending Mail Through SFA's E-mail Servers

The Issue

With the addition of the Meridius Spam filter and the firewall, if you access the Internet from on-campus dorms or if you access the Internet from off-campus, you may experience problems when sending e-mail. These issues will only arise if:
  • you use an e-mail client other than mySFA (ex: Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, etc.) and...

  • that e-mail client is configured to use either titan.sfasu.edu or sfaadm.sfasu.edu as the outgoing mail server and...

  • you are sending a message to any e-mail address that does not end with "sfasu.edu".

So basically, you will experience problems when you try to send to an e-mail address that is not provided by SFA. The problem will appear in the form of an error message that includes this message:

"Policy rejection on the target address: johndoe@hotmail.com"

The Solution

In order for you to continue to send e-mail through titan.sfasu.edu or sfaadm.sfasu.edu, you will need to make some configuration changes to your e-mail client. Since there are many e-mail clients, this page will only focus on the three of which we are most aware, Outlook, Outlook Express and Eudora for Windows operating systems. The versions covered are Outlook 2003, Outlook Express 6, and Eudora 6.1. Other versions of Outlook and Outlook Express will look similar as well as some earlier versions of Eudora.

The first change is to configure your client to use secure ports when checking your e-mail and when sending an e-mail message. The second change is to configure your client to authenticate (send your user name and password) when sending an e-mail message. For the more advanced users, the following ports can be configured in your e-mail client.
  • if your client uses POP3 (or POP) for checking your e-mail, use port 995
  • if your client uses IMAP for checking your e-mail, use port 993
  • For your outgoing server (sending e-mail), use port 465.
