Leading the way
Get involved. Make friends. Make a difference. At SFA, new Lumberjacks have opportunities to participate in campus life and develop leadership skills through a variety of service projects and activities.
As a member of the Freshman Leadership Academy (FLA), you’ll have access to unique, service-focused study abroad experiences, and you’ll also organize events and community outreach projects right here in Nacogdoches.
The Freshman Leadership Academy will help your academic career, too. Students who participate in FLA typically have higher GPAs and test scores than students who choose not to participate – and they’re more likely to graduate on time!
All students enrolled in FLA must also be enrolled in SFA 101, which is a specially designed, one-credit course that helps new Lumberjacks adjust to college life. SFA 101 classes meet twice a week, so you’ll need to make sure that you have room in your schedule to attend class and complete all required coursework.
Opportunities and projects
From the very first day on campus, FLA members interact with members of the SFA community, from administrators and instructors to upperclassmen to your fellow incoming freshmen.
Each year, the FLA project is different, making it a unique experience for every freshman class. Most recently, students decorated and sold customized axe handles to raise money for college-bound orphans in Romania.
You’ll also have the opportunity to join your fellow FLA members on a summer leadership journey — a unique service-learning experience.
First-year Residential Learning Communities
All FLA members are eligible to live in a specially designated first-year Residential Learning Community (RLC). RLCs are made up of students who hold common interests. Members of RLCs live in the same residence halls and participate in a variety of learning and social activities.
If you’re interested in applying for the FLA RLC, just specify that on your FLC application.
Beyond freshman year
Your leadership opportunities don’t end with your freshman year. Many Lumberjacks who participate in FLA during their first year at SFA become active in one of our many leadership programs for upperclassmen, including:
Additional leadership opportunities
Another great way to spread your leadership wings is to get involved in one of our nearly 250 clubs and organizations. See more about SFA Clubs & Organizations.
