Mass Communication Program Facilities
Giving students studying Mass Media access to facilities, equipment, software are just part of a students success. Combine this with exceptional teaching, dedicated professors, and hands-on experience will fully prepare students with an emphasis in Journalism, Radio-TV and Strategic Media for quality jobs in this field.
KSAU-90.1 FM
The student radio station allows students to participate and learn both studio and field production technology while broadcasting locally under FM 90.1. The 3,500-watt station broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the Boynton Building on campus providing programming that is distributed to the public.
SFA TV-2
Television production courses utilize the department operated television facilities which includes a studio, a control room, master control, production office and 3 edit suites. Students enjoy access to several non-linear edit systems complete with updated industry standard software. Several field cameras including some in HD are available for student use.
Photographic Journalism & Lighting Lab
The Photographic Journalism lab and Lighting lab provide students classroom and lab facilities with an emphasis on visual media. Students have access to industry standard technology and equipment. Our 32 computers are loaded with a variety of industry standard software including:

- Adobe Illustrator CS 6
- Adobe Dreamweaver CS 5
- Adobe Premire Pro CS 5

The facility also includes a lighting lab allowing students with an emphasis in photojournalism to practice hands-on lighting skills. The lab includes several monolight strobes, octobox, softbox, and backgrounds. Students must be trained prior to use but then have full access to the lab by reservation.
We go one step further in helping our students succeed by granting access to vital equipment needed for coursework and assignments. Students have the ability to rent DSLR cameras, lighting equipment and even laptops to complete course assignments. During a typical semester we loan over 800 pieces of equipment and have over 20 hours of open lab time including nights and weekends.
Some of the equipment available for loan are:
- Canon Digital Rebels with 18-55mm lens
- Apple MacBook laptops complete with Adobe CS 6 software
- Tripods, flash units and other misc. photo equipment
- Field audio recorders
- Digital video cameras
Advertising & Public Relations Lab
The Boynton Advertising & Public Relations lab is the primary facility for all journalism, advertising and PR courses. The lab was was completely renovated spring 2013. Housed in the Boynton building, the Journalism Lab combines the perfect combination of technology for our students to succeed while learning professional journalism. Most of the 22 computers mirror applications found within the Photographic Journalism lab. Software includes:
