Reach new heights
Looking for adventure? Climbing is a great way to challenge yourself, build up your strength and have some fun all at the same time. And if you’re a Lumberjack, you can do your climbing right on campus!
Hit the wall
Curious about climbing? Stop by the Rec Center and check out our 34-foot, free-standing rock wall. Designed for newbies or seasoned climbers, the wall features 11 dedicated top rope climbs and three sports lead climbs. Not sure what the difference is? That’s one of the things you’ll learn about when you complete our required, 1.5-hour belay class before you try the rock wall for yourself.
Another bonus for climbers: If you prefer more of a challenge, we also have a 13-foot bouldering cave you can tackle.
Rock wall hours:
Monday - Thursday 4 – 9 p.m.
Friday & Sunday 2 – 7 p.m.
SFA challenge course
The indoor rock wall isn’t your only opportunity for adventure at SFA. The university’s Outdoor Pursuits program offers a challenge course to help student groups and classes build problem-solving and leadership skills.
You and your group can brave a ropes course up to 30 feet high, speed along a zip line and try the Leap of Faith (you’ll just have to see it for yourself). You’ll find a different set of challenges if you try the low ropes course, which has 10 elements that require teamwork and communication to complete.
The Challenge Course is in the Experiential Learning Center within the Rec Center. Reservations are required.
Not in a student group? Don't worry, you still can try the Challenge Course during the free Lumberjack Open Climb.
Outdoor Pursuits: clinics and adventures
Ready to take your climbing skills to the next level? The Outdoor Pursuits program offers free climbing clinics that can help you progress from the basics to more advanced techniques, including bouldering.
And you can put those skills to work during an Outdoor Pursuits climbing adventure. Most recently, the program hosted paid trips to the Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma and Big Bend National Park in Texas, where students climbed in beautiful natural settings.
Jacks on Belay climbing competition
Campus Recreation’s annual wall-climbing competition, held in early November, draws college students from throughout Texas. Participants, divided into divisions based on gender and skill level, test their skills in top rope-climbing and bouldering challenges.
In addition to the chance to win medallions for your climbing skills, you can enter prize drawings at this event.
Visit the Jacks on Belay page for more information.
