Sport Clubs

Organized competition with serious fun

Sport clubs are student-run organizations that give you the opportunity to have fun while gaining valuable leadership experience and engaging in some friendly competition. Through the learning experiences afforded by sport clubs, these teams bridge the gap between intramural sports and varsity athletics.

And our wide variety of sport clubs ensures that there’s a little something for everyone. Love the outdoors? Check out our rock climbing club or join our national champion Bass Fishing club. Looking for something a little more laid back? Ultimate frisbee or Quidditch might be more your style.

Competitions

Sport clubs offer just the right balance of fun and friendly competition.

While sport clubs aren’t as competitive as our varsity athletics programs, members still enjoy going head-to-head with clubs from other Texas schools like The University of Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Christian University, Sam Houston State University, The University of Houston, Southern Methodist University and UT-Dallas.

Some clubs even compete against teams from all over the country.

How to join a sport club

Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an elite athlete to join a sport club. Everyone is welcome, and no previous experience is necessary. All you have to do is show up with your sense of fun and enthusiasm! You can join at any point during the academic year.

To join a sport club, learn more or start a sport club of your own, simply come to a club practice, call 936.468.1434 or email the club president.

GPA requirements

Campus Recreation does not have a GPA requirement to join a club. However, most clubs are bound by a National Governing Body (NGB) that requires a certain GPA in order to play. Participants will need to check with the NGB of that sport in order to check GPA requirements. Most are a 2.0.

Equipment and Dues

Is expensive equipment holding you back from trying a sport? Don’t worry, some clubs have extra equipment you can borrow. All clubs have dues each semester to help cover travel and other expenses. Sport clubs receive funds from Campus Recreation to help offset some costs.
