How to Apply for SFA Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs

STEP 1 - Complete your Application in Horizons

Log in to Horizons, click the "Search programs" tab at the top of the page and click the "Apply" button next to the program you wish to apply for! You will log in with you MySFA Username and ID (DO NOT REGISTER FOR A NEW ACCOUNT). You will then move through the application steps. Our application will require you to upload a scan of your current passport, so you may want to have a copy of your passport in-hand when applying. If you do not have access to a scanner, simply skip the passport step on the application and send us a copy of your passport in the mail - our office can upload it for you.

Note: After you submit your application, you will pay a $50 application fee (cash, check, or money order payable to SFA) at the cashier's window in the Austin Building. You will have to present the payment slip (available in the Required Document Section of your Horizons application). Unfortunately we cannot accept credit cards/online payment. If you aren't in town, you can mail the $50 SFA application fee with the payment slip to the Business Office (please make checks payable to SFASU):

If you have studied abroad with SFA before, the application fee is waived.

You can stop and restart your application at any time - just hit the "Save and Continue Later" button - but make sure that you actually submit the application by the deadline. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an automated email confirming your submission. At that point your application status will change from "Incomplete" to "Pending". Once you submit your application, don't forget to pay the $50 application fee.

STEP 2 - Visit your Faculty Leader

After you have submitted your application, and your application status shows up as "Pending", the faculty instructor of the program will review your application and make an admission decision after your visit. Most faculty members will consider things like GPA, class standing, judicial history, and interest in the program (based on what you've written in your study statement on your application).

STEP 3 - Receive Verification from Study Abroad Office

You will receive an admissions decision via email within 7 to 14 days of the application deadline, unless our office tells you otherwise. Your application status will change from "Pending" to "Approved", "Not-Approved", or "Waitlisted". If you are Not-Approved or Waitlisted, we will provide you with a reason why and we will refund you the $50 SFA application fee.

STEP 4 - Pay Deposit and Submit Admission Reply Form

Congratulations! You've been accepted into a SFA Faculty-led Program!

In order to confirm your spot in the program you must:

1. Pay a deposit - The acceptance email you receive from our office will give you exact details on how much your deposit will be and how to pay.

2. Submit the Admission Reply Form - This is an "agreement" you sign with our office acknowledging that you are participating in the program and that you agree to respond to all deadlines and communications from our office in a timely fashion.

If we do not receive your Admission Reply Form and deposit within 7 to 10 days of the approval of your application, we will offer your spot to another applicant.

STEP 5 - Additional Requirements

Follow instructions regarding additional requirements for your specific program and for OIP (passport, waivers, payments, etc.). If you are planning to use Financial Aid funds, submit the appropriate forms to your Financial Aid advisor.

STEP 6 - Pay Program Fee

Pay program fees for your SFA program following the payment schedule of your program. Payments should be made at the cashiers windows in the Austin Building. Online payment is not available.

STEP 7 - Attend Pre-Departure Sessions

Attend all pre-departure orientations scheduled for your program by the SFA Office of International Programs and your faculty leader.

STEP 8 - Register for your Program course and pay tuition and fees.

STEP 9 - Study Abroad!

STEP 10 - Complete Program Evaluation

Submit your program evaluation through Abroad 101, you will receive an email with instructions shortly after your return date.

This is REQUIRED for all students who receive the Study Abroad Scholarship from International Programs.
