SFA Student Scholarship for Study Abroad

  1. Stephen F. Austin State University will charge and collect from students registered at the institution a fee of $1 each semester (fall, spring, summer I, summer II)
  2. Fees collected shall be deposited in SFA's international education assistance fund. Money in this fund may be used only to assist SFA students participating in study abroad programs. No administrative fee, cost, or overhead may be charged or collected from the fund by the University.
  3. Study abroad program is defined as:
    1. Single course (3 hours credit) if faculty-led study abroad program is designated as one course.
    2. Two courses (6 hours credit) if conducted by same faculty - designed as a 6-hour package.
    3. One independent study abroad experience per year - minimum 12 hours for OIP $1000 long term award.
    The purpose of these definitions or restrictions is to provide scholarships to the largest possible number of students each year. Students may receive one scholarship for designated amount once in a twelve-month academic year period. The academic year begins in the fall and ends with summer II of the following year.
  4. Eligibility for Scholarship:
    Eligibility to apply is based on acceptance into one of SFA's approved faculty-led programs, student exchanges, or independent study abroad programs. If you select an independent study program the courses MUST be pre-approved for transfer from the Admissions Office. Contact the Office of International Programs (OIP) to confirm study abroad eligibility and designation of program. Individual financial need is not a criterion in the awarding of the scholarship. Eligible students are those who have been enrolled at least one semester at SFA during the twelve-month period prior to the commencement of the eligible study abroad program. Students must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher to be eligible for the scholarship (GPA will be calculated through most recent full-semester preceding application deadline or commencement of the study abroad program.)
  5. The amount of the Scholarship will vary depending on the eligible programs. For students participating in Summer faculty led programs the award amount is to be $400. For students participating in an approved student teaching overseas program the award amount is to be $1000 (a total of five awards are to be given per long semester). For students participating in approved ISEP programs the award amount is to be $1000 for long semester programs. Funds are provided on a first come, first served basis until depleted.
  6. Funds are disbursed by posted schedule either directly to student's individual university account or to the program account for a faculty-led program. No disbursements are made directly to students, faculty, administrative units, or program providers.
  7. Application deadlines:
    • Spring programs: December 1
    • Summer programs: April 15
    • Fall programs: July 15
    Students are to complete the OIP Study Abroad Scholarship application and submit it along with a current copy of the students transcript to the OIP.
  8. OIP Study Abroad Scholarship Disbursement Dates:
    • Spring programs: December 10
    • Summer programs: May 1
    • Fall programs: August 15
    Funds will be posted directly to the university account of (1) the individual student or (2) the account of the faculty-led program. Funds for participants may be used to pay tuition or fees, costs related to travel and programs. If the student has paid all costs, a refund will be issued.
  9. Regular SFA Financial Aid may be available to qualifying students participating in study abroad programs. Consult with your financial aid counselor to determine one's eligibility and amount of financial assistance.
