Funding Options
One of the first questions usually asked regarding studying abroad is "How expensive is it?" Followed by, "How do I finance my program?"
While studying abroad can be expensive, many students in financial need manage to do so every year! In order to achieve your study abroad goals without going further into educational debt you must plan early and develop a strategy.
The Office of International Programs (OIP) and the Financial Aid staff can help!
Free Sources for Student Aid
- US Department of Education - or call 1-800-4-FED-AID
- Other federal agencies (including the military, if appropriate)
- Your state education agency - check the phone book for the local number or visit here
- Scholarships - there are many scholarships available specifically for study abroad
- Internet research - search the internet for different study abroad scholarships and/or financial aid -- be cautious because some scams operate from the web
- Financial Aid - students already receiving financial aid may be able to apply their aid towards study abroad
- Library - the reference section of your school or public library
- Holiday/Birthday gifts - ask family/friends to help by contributing to a special study abroad fund as a gift on special occasions.
- Fundraising - car washes, garage or bake sales, etc. -- be creative! SFA and OIP do NOT condone students selling items, such as magazines, door to door.
- Service organizations or churches - ask for support from your hometown organizations in return for giving a presentation of your experience when you return
- Organizations related to your field of study or interest (including professional associations)
- Your employer or your parents' employers
As you can see there are many different ways to finance your study abroad program. To find out more information contact the Study Abroad Coordinator.
