SFA to present guest violinist

Sylvia Bierschenk - April 25, 2006

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Sergio Gonzalez in a guest violin recital at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6, in the Music Recital Hall of the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

Gonzalez will perform "Tango Etude" by Astor Piazolla and W.A. Mozart's fifth violin concerto, considered by many to be his finest, according to Jennifer Dalmas, SFA assistant professor of music.

Also included on the program is Edouard Lalo's "Symphonie Espagnole in D minor, Op. 21." Although the work is officially a symphony, written for violin and orchestra, it is considered a violin concerto by musicians today, Dalmas explained.

Pianist Warren Harper will accompany Gonzalez.

Gonzalez began playing the violin at the age of 12 in the Austin Independent School District. He was named to the All-Region and All-State Orchestras and was concertmaster of the Austin Youth Symphony from 1999 to 2001. He was also selected as a winner in the Pearl Amster Youth Competition in Austin.

Gonzalez currently studies with Philip Lewis at the University of North Texas.

The recital is free and open to the public. For more information, please call (936) 468-6407.
