NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present a joint concert of the Symphonic and University bands at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
Highlights of the University Band's portion of the program include "Chorale Prelude: Abide with Me" by Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands; Alfred Reed's "A Festival Prelude" and "The Pride of Illini" by Karl L. King.
"King's piece is the march from which the SFA Fight Song is derived,"
explained Weston Fisher, graduate student who co-directs the University Band with David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands. "As the audience members listen to the trio of the march, they'll recognize the Fight Song's roots," Fisher continued.
Under the direction of Kevin Whitelaw, SFA adjunct faculty, the Symphonic Band will perform a program of music by English composers, including Philip Sparke's newly composed "Madrigalum" and Kenneth Alford's "Colonel Bogey."
The Symphonic Band will also present Ralph Vaughan Williams' "English Folk Song Suite," a standard in the band repertoire, according to Whitelaw. David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands, will guest conduct Edward Elgar's "Nimrod."
Tickets to the concert are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
