season-closing concert, "Timeless Melodies," at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. Pictured with Raychev is Gene H. Moon, the orchestra's director.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - "Strength, passion, love, introspection and patriotism" are all emotions that audience members will experience during the Orchestra of the Pines' concert, 'Timeless Melodies,'" said Gene H. Moon, the regional orchestra's director. The season-closing concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The program includes three masterpieces with which most patrons will be
familiar: the overture to Richard Wagner's "Rienzi," Sir Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto and Anton Dvorák's Ninth Symphony, "From the New World,"
explained Moon, who is also the director of orchestral studies at SFA.
"Together, they provide an emotional journey, not just an orchestral concert."

"Dvorák's New World Symphony will provide an exhilarating opening to the concert,' said Moon. "Written during the composer's visits to America, the work uses melodies fashioned in the style of Native American and Negro spiritual music, styles the composer found intriguing. The symphony is a classic representation of old American traditions embodied in the masterwork of a European legend."

Next on the program is one of Elgar's most famous works, the Cello Concerto, featuring Evgeni Raychev, the orchestra's principal cellist and SFA instructor of music.

"Evgeni is the consummate musician," Moon said. "His love and passion for the cello is easily seen while he plays, and he draws the listener nearer to him as he creates his art. In addition, his Elgar is unique and will be an absolutely wonderful performance."

The orchestra will conclude the concert with Wagner's overture.

"Full of grandiose gesture and romantic idealism, the work encapsulates three thematic areas: the valiant Roman hero's character, his prayer and the people of Rome's victory march."

The Orchestra of the Pines is comprised of SFA faculty, students and guest orchestral musicians. The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts, School of Music and Orchestra Series. It is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and the Wedgeworth-Wright Endowment for the Arts.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $5 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
