NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Stephen F. Austin State University's 16-member Percussion Ensemble will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
Under the direction of Scott Harris, SFA assistant professor of music,
the group will perform works from a wide variety of percussion and
musical styles.
"The concert will open with Michael Burritt's exciting and aggressive drum quartet, 'The Doomsday Machine,' which is named after and inspired by an episode of the original Star Trek series," Harris said.
The program also includes David Gillingham's "Stained Glass" and Michael Udow's "African Welcome Piece."
"Gillingham's three-movement work showcases the awesome range of percussion color, texture and orchestration and Udow's piece features the entire ensemble demonstrating complex African-based rhythms," explained Harris.
Guest student conductors include Freddy Lopez, Port Isabel junior; Kayla Roth, Lufkin junior; and graduate student Harrell Hodges.
The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
