SFA jazz bands present season-closing concert

Members of Stephen F. Austin State University's The Swingin' Axes jazz band perform during a recent concert. The group will present a joint concert with the Swingin' Aces at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces, Stephen F. Austin State University's jazz bands, will present their final concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

The Aces, under the direction of SFA Assistant Professor Deb Scott, will open the concert with a variety of numbers featuring soloists.

Trumpeter Gary Wurtz, SFA assistant professor and director of the Swingin' Axes, will be featured on Dave Wolpe's arrangement of "Harlem Nocturn," and Chris Reeves, Laird Hill senior, will be the featured pianist on "My Romance" by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart.

Mark Taylor's "Granada Smoothie" will feature Houston sophomore Roger Marquis on flugelhorn and Waxahachie freshman Will Davis on trumpet. Chuck Mangione's "Hill Where the Lord Hides" will spotlight Orange freshman Kyle Castilaw on flugelhorn.

The Swingin' Axes will perform two pieces by Sonny Rollins: "Airegin" and "St. Thomas." Matt Porter, Athens sophomore, will be the featured trombonist on "God Bless the Child" by Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog, Jr.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.
