SFA's Swingin' Axes to present concert

Sylvia Bierschenk- April 15, 2008

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Swingin' Axes, Stephen F. Austin State University's premier jazz band, will perform music by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band during its season-closing concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

According to the big band's Web site, the group "celebrates and personifies the best of the big band tradition with a very contemporary and original sound. . . .Gordon's witty and insightful arrangements propel the listener on a journey through a myriad of styles: latin, blues, swing, classical, hard-hitting jazz and even an homage to Looney Tunes."

Axes' director Gary Wurtz called Goodwin's group "today's hottest big band" and said his students are excited to be playing their hits such as "Hunting Wabbits," "Cut 'n Run," "The Phat Pack" and "Horn of Puente."

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. The W.M. Turner Auditorium is located in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Dr.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.sfasu.edu/finearts or call (936) 468-6047 or (888) 240-ARTS.
