Nacogdoches resident named SFA Board of Regents chairman

Dr. Baker Pattillo, president of Stephen F. Austin State University, congratulates Joe Max Green after his appointment as chairman of the SFA Board of Regents.

Nacogdoches businessman Joe Max Green was named chairman of the Board of Regents of Stephen F. Austin State University during the April meeting.

Green is chairman and CEO of Joe Max Green Insurance Concepts in Nacogdoches. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from SFA in 1960 and is regional vice president of the Texas Association of Insurance Agents and a member of the National Council of Insurance Agents.

In addition to membership in the Nacogdoches Rotary Club and on the Nacogdoches Economic Development Committee, Green is a former board member of the SFA University Foundation. He has been recognized by the university with the SFA Distinguished Alumni Award and inducted into the SFA University Hall of Honor. He has been awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award by Rotary International and has been recognized by the community as Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.

Green previously served as secretary for the board and fills the position vacated by Valerie Ertz of Dallas. Ertz completed two terms as chairwoman of the board. James Thompson of Sugar Land was re-appointed vice chair of the Board of Regents. He is president and founder of Team Associates Inc. and has served as mayor pro tem, city council member and airport council liaison for the City of Sugar Land. Thompson has also served on the board of the Sugar Land 4B Corporation and the Houston Galveston Area Council. He received a bachelor's degree from SFA and is a life member of the Stephen F. Austin Alumni Association.

Melvin White of Pflugerville was elected secretary of the board. He is founder of Digital Workforce Academy, Inc. He is a board member of the Stephen F. Austin Alumni Association and treasurer of the Texas Association of Historically Underutilized Businesses. White also is an associate member of Stephen F. Austin's Lettermen's Association and program director of Digital Workforce Academy. He received a bachelor's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.

All SFA regents are appointed by the Texas governor. Green’s term on the board expires in 2009, and the terms of Thompson and White expire in 2011.
