Sylvia Bierschenk - April 22, 2008

NACOGDCOHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine arts and School of Music will present the Wind Symphony in "Something Old, Something New" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

"We will be performing a collection of contemporary band pieces sprinkled with favorite old standards," said David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands and the ensemble's conductor.

The band will open the concert with J.J. Richards' march "Crusade for Freedom," directed by Graduate Assistant Conductor Kenneth Peters.

Later in the program, Campo will direct another work from the standard repertoire, Robert Russell Bennett's "Symphonic Songs for Band." The three-movement suite was commissioned in 1957 by Kappa Kappa Psi, the national band fraternity.

Other works on the program include Jonathan Newman's "Moon by Night" and Ron Nelson's "Lauds (Praise High Day)," which honors the sunrise and is filled with the excitement of a new day, explained Campo.

The band will also perform a band arrangement of Morton Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium" and close the concert with David Gillingham's "Internal Combustion."

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.sfasu.edu/finearts or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
