Steve Westbrook, dean of Student Affairs at Stephen F. Austin State University, has been named interim vice president for university affairs, pending approval by the SFA Board of Regents.
“During the last meeting of the Board of Regents, Mr. Westbrook’s title was changed from executive director of student affairs to dean of student affairs,” said Dr. Baker Pattillo, interim president of SFA. “At that time, I explained that Mr. Westbrook has been here for 25 years and has proven his capabilities and his dedication to SFA. I have all the trust and confidence in the world in him, and it’s a great privilege to be able to name him interim vice president.”
At SFA, Westbrook supervises a staff that has responsibility for Campus Recreation, the Student (University) Center, Housing and Residence Life, the Multicultural Center, Student Activities, and Student Leadership and Governance, as well as the SFA Ticket Office and the SFA Graphics Shop.
In addition to these areas of responsibility, Westbrook has been closely involved with the development of the new SFA Student Center since the project inception in 2001 and with the development of the new SFA Student Recreation Center since the inception of that project in 2003.
As interim vice president for university affairs, Westbrook’s responsibilities will include oversight of Counseling and Career Services, Disability Services, the Health Clinic, Judicial Affairs, Student Publications and the University Police Department.
Westbrook earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in counseling from SFA and began his first job at the university in 1981, serving first as University Center program advisor through 1985, then as coordinator of programs from 1985 until 1989. In 1989, he was named director of student activities and served as director of student affairs from 2001-2005. He was named executive director of student affairs in 2005.
Westbrook recently served as the chair of the board of the National Association for Campus Activities. He has received the association’s Outstanding Service Citation and the Markley Award for Outstanding Service. He has presented sessions at both the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Association of College Unions – International regarding student union design and financing.
At SFA, he has served on numerous committees including the University Technology Committee, the University Financial Planning Committee, the Enrollment Management Steering Committee, the Strategic Plan Implementation Committee, and he serves as co-chair of the First Year Experience Committee.
Westbrook has been married to his wife Dayna, who teaches and coaches at Douglass, for 15 years. They have two sons and are active members of the First United Methodist Church in Nacogdoches.
