Smoke from elevator motor prompts Garner evacuation

Andy Kesling - August 11, 2007

No injuries were reported early Saturday morning when smoke from an elevator motor prompted the evacuation of Garner Apartments on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

The Nacogdoches Fire Department responded when smoke from the motor triggered the building fire alarm system at 1:47 a.m. Saturday. Eighty student residents safely evacuated the 14-story building.

Although smoke filled the elevator room on top of Garner, no flames were reported. Smoke was contained to the elevator room and never intruded into any of the 131 apartment units in the building.

Damage was limited to one of the three elevator units in the building that opened in 1968.

Safety officials cleared residents to reenter the building about an hour after the fire alarm prompted the evacuation.
