NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Reservations are now being accepted for a bus tour to the Fort Worth Cultural Arts District on Friday, Sept. 7, sponsored by the art history area of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art.
Participants will be able to visit the Kimbell Art Museum, the Modern Art Museum and the Amon Carter Museum.
"The highlight of the trip will be 'The Mirror and the Mask: Portraiture in the Age of Picasso" at the Kimbell Art Mueum,'" said Jill Carrington, SFA associate professor of art history and the trip's coordinator.
The exhibition features more than 90 paintings and several sculptures by artists such as Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Picasso, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Oskar Kokoschka, Max Beckman, Francis Bacon and Jean Dubuffet.
"The exhibition uses Picasso as a constant reference point, following the changes in his style in relation to trends in portraiture throughout Europe," according to the museum's Web site.
The Modern Art Museum currently features "Ron Mueck," an exhibition which includes hyper realistic, over-life-size sculptures of everyday people.
At the Amon Carter Museum is "Chimneys and Towers: Charles Demuth's Late Paintings of Lancaster."
According to the museum's Web site, "This exhibition examines a key group of paintings from the late career of Charles Demuth (1883-1935), one of America's preeminent twentieth-century modernist painters. The show places his works within the larger cultural context of the American avant-garde."
Also at the Amon Carter Museum is a related exhibition, "A Sense of Place: Precisionism in America," which examines the style in which Demuth worked, explained Carrington.
"Participants also have the option of taking a short walk to the Museum of Science and History, which also contains the Omni Theater and Noble Planetarium," Carrington said.
Cost for the tour is $30 for community members and $10 for SFA students, faculty, staff and spouses. The price includes transportation on the SFA road bus, admission to the Kimbell Art Museum and a box lunch. Admission to the Amon Carter Museum is free.
Admission to the Modern Art Museum is $4 for students with a student ID and seniors over the age of 60. Admission for other adults is $10. Admission packages to the Museum of Science and History range from $7 to $20.
The bus will depart from in front of the School of Art on Wilson Drive at 7 a.m. and arrive in Fort Worth at approximately 11 a.m. At 6 p.m., the bus will leave Fort Worth, make a dinner stop at a cluster of fast food restaurants and arrive in Nacogdoches around 11 p.m.
Parking passes which will allow community members to park for the day in the School of Art/Arboretum parking lot will be provided on the morning of the trip.
