NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Scott Harris, director of percussion at Stephen F. Austin State University, will perform a faculty percussion recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in Cole Concert Hall. Subtitled "Keyboard Percussion Music from Around the World," the program is a collection of works for marimba and vibraphone written in or inspired by different cultures of the world.

Harris, assistant professor of music, will open the recital with "Three Movements for a Solo Dancer" by German composer Eckhard Kopetzki. Written for solo marimba, this work was the winning composition in the 2003 Percussive Arts Society International Composition Contest.

Flutist Christina Guenther-Scott, visiting assistant professor of music at SFA, will join Harris on Gareth Farr's "Kembang Suling." The piece, subtitled "Three Musical Snapshots of Asia," is a chamber work for flute and marimba based on rhythms and melodies from Bali, Japan and South India.

Also included on the program is "Toccata and Divertimento," a vibraphone and guitar duet by Brazilian composer Ney Rosauro featuring guitarist Allen Scott, SFA adjunct faculty.

During the second half of the recital, four of Harris' students will join him in presenting an African marimba and djembe solo, an American jazz marimba and vibraphone duet and a Japanese chamber work for solo marimba and four percussionists. The works all feature melodic keyboard instruments, but they will also give the audience a taste of the driving and energetic African and Japanese drumming styles, explained Harris.

The students, all members of the percussion studio, are Nacogdoches junior Alex Aucoin, Wylie sophomore David Lipe, Port Isabel junior Freddy Lopez and Rockwall junior Stephanie Shing.

Harris said he has enjoyed putting the recital together. "I haven't been this excited about a program in many years. Each piece showcases a completely different writing and performance style for these instruments. Moments of quiet reflection are equally balanced with moments of explosive rhythmic energy. I think the audience will really enjoy the show."

The recital is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
