University anglers to be featured on ESPN2 talk show Saturday

February 15, 2006– Susan Hammons

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS-Two Stephen F. Austin State University students who recently hooked the first collegiate bass national championship have snagged additional exposure for SFA with an appearance Saturday, Feb. 18, on a national sports channel talk show.

Casey Sobczak, Spring junior, and Jonathan Garrie, Baytown senior, will share tips on preserving fishing equipment and thus saving money on "Bass Tech" on ESPN2 at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The 30-minute show will re-air at 10:30 a.m.

The two anglers taped the show in Little Rock, Ark., Jan. 21.

This past October the pair beat two-student teams from five other universities to win the ESPN College Smashmouth Tournament, also in Arkansas. Competitors were the University of Kentucky, the University of Iowa, the University of Illinois, Texas A&M University and Purdue University.

"We've always completed in small towns around this area," Sobczak said. "We thought we had an edge on the other guys already because the lake
that we were fishing was similar to what we were used to. A&M were the only guys we were worried about."

The SFA team has been invited to participate Oct. 13-15 in a Fox College Sports bass tournament that is expected to attract at least 16 schools.

In addition to Sobczak and Garrie, Ryan Ingram, an SFA senior from Plano, is scheduled to be the alternate in that tournament. Ingram was Angler of the Year in the Collegiate Angler Scholarship Tour.

Team faculty adviser Dr. Ray Worsham, also SFA director of intramurals, is hoping to bring even further recognition to the university by luring the October tournament here. Worsham said the tournament organizers are looking at the Piney Woods Conservation Center on Lake Sam Rayburn after he suggested it as an ideal location compared to a metro site originally considered.

Worsham said he does not know when the site will be finalized, but if SFA were to play host, the university would be showcased for 13 weeks on national TV. FOX College Sports will award scholarships to the top five participants in the tournament.
