NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - East Texas Baroque, a quartet of Stephen F. Austin State University faculty members, will present a recital of English Baroque music at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
Performers include flutist Christina Guenther, violinist Jennifer Dalmas, cellist Evgeni Raychev and harpsichordist Ron Petti. All four received the Doctor of Music degree from Florida State University where they studied period instrument performance practice, in addition to their modern instruments.
"The works we are performing are all trio-sonatas, a common Baroque form consisting of two treble instruments (in this case flute and violin) and basso-continuo (the combination of harpsichord and cello)," explained Guenther. "Noticeable in all these works is their distinct dance-like quality."
The program includes two works by William Boyce: "Trio Sonata No. 12 in G Major" and "Trio Sonata No. 5 in D Major." The quartet will also perform G.F. Handel's "Sonata in e minor, op. 5" and Henry Purcell's "Golden Sonata."
"We hope to present the audience with an enjoyable and exciting listening experience and to provide an aural glimpse into the vast array of Baroque music," Guenther said.
The recital is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For more information, please visit www. finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
