Using GPS in the great outdoors

Shirley Luna - February 13, 2007

A growing number of hunters and fishermen are using global positioning systems (GPS) for everything from finding their way out of the woods to pinpointing that great crappie hole. Yet, the ever increasing array of new equipment on the market leaves many sportsmen confused about which device to buy and how to use them.

The Columbia Center will host a one-day GPS workshop for hunters and outdoor recreation persons on Feb. 17 and again on Feb 24. The workshops will be held at the Columbia Center located at 106 S. Pecan in downtown Nacogdoches.

The hands-on workshop will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 1 p.m. The Columbia Center will provide access to Garmin GPS units to conduct the workshop. But, participants may bring their own GPS unit. Exercises will include how to set up and use GPS units to establish way points, develop tracks and how to carry out basic navigation activities.

Space is limited to 14 individuals per workshop. There is no charge for the training.

Please call (936) 468-6100 for more information or e-mail Dr. Darrel L. McDonald at dmcdonald@sfasu.edu to reserve a space, indicating the date of attendance.

Space will be held on a first come/first served basis. Walk-ins on the day of the workshop will be accepted only if space is available.
