NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Tickets are still available for ArtsPower's production of "Harry the Dirty Dog" which will be presented at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in W.M. Turner Auditorium in Nacogdoches. The show is a part of the Stephen F. Austin State University Children's Performing Arts Series.
The musical, targeted for children in kindergarten through second grade, is based on Gene Zion's classic book about Harry, the white dog with black spots who hates to take baths.
He hates them so much, in fact, that one morning he runs away. After a wonderful day spent playing in the dirt, Harry gets so dirty that he turns into a little black dog with white spots and returns home to find that his family doesn't recognize him.
"The production captures both the whimsical humor and the touching dedication to family found in the original story," said Diane Flynn, director of the children's series.
Founded in 1985 by Gary Blackman and Mark Blackman, award-winning musicians and nationally-traveled artists-in-residence, ArtsPower National Touring Theatre has become one of America's largest non-profit producers of professional children's theatre.
According to the company's Web site, its mission is "to create, present and tour nationally recognized professional theatre of the highest caliber."
"As part of our last season, the company presented 'Amber Brown Is not a Crayon,' and it was very well received," Flynn said. "We are looking forward to sharing this new production with the school children of East Texas.
The event, sponsored in part by FrameSaver of Nacogdoches, is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and Children's Performing Arts Series.
