Girls invited to expand career horizons at SFA

Shirley Luna - February 7, 2006

Girls in sixth through eighth grade will learn about careers ranging from architecture to zoo administration at a Feb. 24 conference at Stephen F. Austin State University.

"Expanding Your Horizons in Mathematics and Science" is a conference for young women interested in career options not traditionally held by females. Co-hosted by the American Association of University Women and SFA, the conference allows students to learn about careers by attending hands-on workshops and forming contacts with women working in these fields.

"This 13th annual conference represents the Nacogdoches AAUW branch's commitment to education and its importance in opening career and life opportunities," said Dr. Lauren Scharff, SFA psychology professor and a co-coordinator of the conference. "National statistics have shown it is during junior high school that many girls stop choosing math and science options, which is why this age group is targeted for the conference. Once in high school, it is important for students to stay on target in the recommended or distinguished program of coursework in order to ensure their success in higher education."

More than 30 different workshops will be offered at the conference, including topics such as criminal investigations, speech-language pathology, sports medicine and biotechnology.

The conference will be from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the University Center, located on the SFA campus.

The registration fee of $13 includes lunch, a conference t-shirt and goody bag. Registration must be received by Feb. 17.
