SFA to present guest lecturer on Botticelli

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will present a guest lecture, "Botticelli's Mythological Paintings," by Dr. Liana De Girolami Cheney at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Room 106 of the Art Annex located behind the Art Studio Building on the SFA campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

"The lecture promises to be quite informative," said Jill Carrington, SFA associate professor of art history. "It will include discussions of the iconic 'Birth of Venus' as well as the 'Primavera,' 'Venus and Mars' and 'Pallas and the Centaur' by the beloved Florentine Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli.

Cheney is a professor of art history and the chair of the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and author or co-author of over 20 books, including "Botticelli's Neoplatonic Images (1983); "Symbolism of Vanitas in the Arts" (1992); "Readings in Italian Mannerism" (1997); "Neoplatonism and the Arts" (2002); and "Neoplatonic Aesthetics: Music, Literature and the Visual Arts" (2004).
