SFA choirs to present 'Love Scenes' concert

Members of Stephen F. Austin State University's Choral Union perform during a recent concert. The Choral Union, Women's Chorus and A Cappella Choir will present a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University A Cappella Choir, Choral Union and Women's Choir will present a joint concert, "Love Scenes," at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, in Cole Concert Hall, located in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

The Choral Union and Women's Chorus will open the concert with choral love songs from the early 17th and 21st centuries. Graduate students Tracy Ward and India Aquino will provide piano accompaniment.

Under the direction of David Howard, SFA associate director of choirs, the choirs will perform works by 17th century composers Salamone Rossi, Claudio Monteverdi, John Dowland and Thomas Campion and 21st century composers Eric Whitacre, Paul Carey and David Dickau.

Jennifer Lewis, Kingwood graduate student, will direct the Women's Choir in singing Monteverdi's "Su, su, su pastoreli vezzosi," and Ryan Smith, Waxahachie graduate student, will direct the Choral Union in performing Thomas Campion's "Love Me or Not."

"The audience will hear beautiful and varied music separated by over 400 years by composers that sought to express the many emotions and myriad experiences of love," said Howard.

The A Cappella Choir, under the direction of Tim King, will present five pieces it performed on its recent tour to high schools in north Dallas, Tyler and Kilgore. Included on the program are Donald P. Moore's "Deep River" and works by J.S. Bach and Alberto Ginastera.
