University to present faculty trumpet recital

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Gary Wurtz in a faculty trumpet recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in Cole Concert Hall.

Wurtz, assistant professor of music at SFA, will open the recital with light-natured works such as “Fantasie Brilliante” by Jean-Baptiste Arban and other works by contemporary composers. Ron Petti, SFA assistant professor, will provide accompaniment.

For the second half of the recital, SFA assistant professors Jeff Jacobsen and Stephen Lias will join Wurtz to perform as a jazz trio.

In addition to teaching trumpet at SFA, Wurtz directs the Swingin’ Axes jazz band. He received his bachelor’s degree from West Texas University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of North Texas.

Prior to joining the SFA faculty in 1992, Wurtz worked as a free-lance musician and private instructor in the Dallas-Forth Worth area.

He was the principal trumpet of the Richardson Symphony Orchestra from 1986 to 2001, taking a year off to serve as the co-principal chair in the Orchestra Filarmonica de Universidad Nacional’ Autonam de Mexico in Mexico City and as principal trumpet for the Orchestra Nacional’ de Republica Dominicana in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic.

In Nacogdoches, he plays trumpet with the Orchestra of the Pines, with whom he has been featured on the “Brandenburg Concerto No. 2” by J.S. Bach, Aaron Copland’s “Quiet City” and the “Concerto in D for Piccolo Trumpet” by Johann Friedrich Fasch.

Wurtz has worked extensively as an orchestral, jazz and studio musician. He appears frequently as a soloist and clinician at other colleges and high schools.
