NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Brian Utley, Stephen F. Austin State University assistant professor of music will present a faculty saxophone recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in Cole Concert Hall.
The recital will feature two works by William Price, who will be on campus working with SFA composition students.
Joining Utley on Price's "Hook, Line, and Sinker" will be clarinetist Christopher Ayer, SFA assistant professor of music, and pianist Kae Hosoda-Ayer, instructor with the SFA Music Preparatory Division. The trio premiered the piece last spring at the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 4 Conference. Utley describes it as "an energetic piece, influenced heavily by rock and roll music."
Ron Petti, SFA assistant professor of music, will provide piano accompaniment for Price's other piece, "Remembrance II," and J.S. Bach's "Sonata in G Minor, BWV 1020."
Utley will also perform "Billie" by Jacob ter Veldhuis, a piece written for saxophone and accompanied by pre-recorded music. According to the composer, much of this pre-recorded music is "based on the voice of Billie Holiday, from various interviews during her career."
The recital is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
