The dance troupe, which is internationally recognized as the leading dance representative of contemporary Hispanic culture in the United States, blends ballet, jazz and Latin dance forms. The performance is a part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts' University Series.
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Ballet Hispanico's performance at Stephen F. Austin State University's W.M. Turner Auditorium on Tuesday, Jan. 31, will now include the New York-based dance company's newest number, "Oerfeu in the Carnaval of Souls."
The reinterpretation of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice has been an audience favorite since it premiered this past November in New York, said Derek Munson, company manager. Alexandre Magno's choreography draws upon the dance traditions and sensual rhythms of his native Brazil and is augmented by Loy Arcenas' exciting score and Anita Yavich's fabulous costumes, Munson explained.
The company will also perform Magno's "Dejame Soñar," the second act of the full-length dance-theater event "NightClub." The salsa piece is set to classic Latin songs by artists such as Tito Puente.
Rounding out the program will be "Club Havana" which features Latin social dances such as the conga, rhumba, mambo and cha cha. According to the company's Web site, "choreographer Pedro Ruiz, a native Cuban, has imagined his very own 'Club Havana,' where it seems that the dancing never ends."
"We are excited about the new program," said Sylvia Bierschenk, director of arts information at SFA. "Each of the three numbers has received wonderful reviews, and we feel especially privileged that Ballet Hispanico is sharing with us its newest dance."
Ballet Hispanico is recognized throughout the world as the leading dance representative of contemporary Hispanic culture in the United States. In its 35 years of existence, Ballet Hispanico has performed for over two million people, appearing in some of the world's leading venues.
The company's national television appearances include CBS Sunday Morning and the 1999 Hispanic Heritage Awards on NBC. In June 1999, the company was featured in a gala birthday celebration honoring President and Mrs. Bush; that September, they performed for 35,000 Met fans at Shea Stadium.
The Nacogdoches performance is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and University Series. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m.
At 6:45 p.m, in Griffith Gallery, the College of Fine Arts will host a reception honoring the event's corporate sponsor, Glaucoma Consultants of East Texas. At 7 p.m., there will be a brief informative talk on the performance.
