The Stephen F. Austin State University Mast Arboretum will begin its 2006 Garden Seminar series with “Gifts From the Garden,” a soap-making workshop, from 9 a.m. until noon Feb. 4 in Room 118 of the Agriculture Building on Wilson Drive.

Zaina Farrar, an experienced soap maker and Kilgore High School graduate, will be leading the demonstration. Attendees can expect to create a variety of herbal soaps, learn recipes and techniques of soap making and take home samples of luxurious soap they make themselves.

“The soap will be made from scratch with vegetable oils, lye, essential oils and dried herbs,” Farrar said. "I will teach them the step-by-step process of cold-process soap making so they can make it at home on their own."

Farrar is a junior forest recreation management major and maintains a 3.69 grade point average. She is the president of the National Association for Interpretation and a member of the Society of American Foresters.

To register for the seminar or for more information, contact the education office at (936) 468-1832 or e-mail erodewald@sfasu.edu.
