NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Tickets are still available for Ballet Hispanico's performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. The event is part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts' University Series.
"It's sure to be a fantastic evening, full of energy, passion and beauty," said Sylvia Bierschenk, director of arts information at SFA.
Recognized as the leading dance representative of the contemporary Hispanic culture in the United States, the New York-based company will present a fusion of ballet, modern and Latin dance forms.
The 13-member troupe will open the evening with "Dejame Soñar, a salsa piece set in a 1950s social club in Spanish Harlem, and then present "Orfeu in the Carnaval of Souls," a reinterpretation of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. It draws upon the dance traditions and sensual rhythms of Brazil.
The concluding number will be "Club Havana." Set in a Havana or New York night club, it features Latin social dances such as the mambo, rhumba, conga and cha cha.
Prior to the performance, the College of Fine Arts will host a 6:45 p.m. reception in Griffith Gallery honoring the event's corporate sponsor, Glaucoma Consultants of East Texas. At 7 p.m., Angela Bacarisse, assistant professor of theatre at SFA, will give a brief informative talk on the performance.
