NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Art works that have rarely been exhibited in the United States will be included in "In the Path of the 'Blaue Reiter': German Expressionist Portfolios, Prints and Books" which will open Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Griffith Gallery on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

The exhibition, which is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts, School of Art and University Series, revolves around four portfolios created by second-generation German Expressionist artists Josef Eberz, Stefan Eggeler, Richard Seewald and Max Thalmann.

Expressionism, according to Shannon Bailey, SFA gallery director, is a modernist art movement that was a manifestation of subjective feeling toward objective reality and the world of imagination.

Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) in Munich, Germany, was a sub-movement of expressionism. It is characterized by strong color, rough pattern, emphasis on subject matter of a highly emotional character and frequent transcendental overtones.

The exhibition's opening will begin with a 6 p.m. gallery talk by David Lewis, art historian and director of the SFA School of Art, and Michael T. Ricker, curator of the exhibition. The men will discuss the movement, the represented artists and the works included in the exhibition. Nacogdoches Junior Forum will host a reception immediately afterwards.

Bailey said she chose the exhibition because she likes to include an occasional historical show. "While art history and printmaking students will certainly benefit from viewing the show, the general public can also appreciate the significance of the exhibition," Bailey explained.

The show will run through Sunday, March 26. It is sponsored in part by Texas Commission on the Arts, Nacogdoches Junior Forum and SFA Friends of the Arts.

Griffith Gallery is located in Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building. Its regular hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free.
