Eric Fortune's cover art for "Tales of the Brothers Grimm and the Sisters Weird," published by Harcourt Books, is one of the original illustrations included in "The Society of Illustrators 48th Annual Traveling Exhibition" which will open in Griffith Gallery on the SFA campus Wednesday, Feb. 7.
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Movie and travel posters, compact disc covers, and illustrations from books and magazines are all included in "The Society of Illustrators 48th Annual Traveling Exhibition" which will open in Stephen F. Austin State University's Griffith Gallery Wednesday, Feb. 7, with a 6 p.m. reception.
This annual tour of 40 original art works selected from the society's annual exhibition has been offered to college galleries for the past 24 years. The works are a representative sample of the best in the six categories of the exhibition: Sequential, Editorial, Book, Advertising, Institutional and Uncommissioned.
"It's a great exhibition that appeals to just about everyone," said Shannon Bailey, SFA gallery director. "The illustrations have appeared in everything from Rolling Stone and The New Yorker to children's books."
Bailey said she first became interested in bringing the show to SFA when she visited the Society of Illustrators' Museum of American Illustration in New York which houses more than 1,500 works of art.
"After viewing the gallery of current illustrators, I knew that the touring
exhibition could serve not only as some great inspiration for our art
students, but also as a source of interest and enjoyment for the greater
East Texas community."
The exhibition is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Art. It is sponsored in part by Texas Commission on the Arts, Nacogdoches Junior Forum and SFA Friends of the Arts. Paint for the galley was donated by Sherwin Williams.
The show, which is located in SFA's Griffith Fine Arts Building Room 208, will run through Friday, March 9. After the opening, regular gallery hours will be 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission to the opening and the exhibition is free.
