History professor to deliver SFA Regents Lecture

The upcoming Stephen F. Austin State University Regents Lecture will be based on a professor's 40-year adventurous journey with a tape recorder and a Volkswagen.

Dr. Bobby H. Johnson, Regents Professor of history, will deliver the address.

"My adventure resulted in several hundred recorded interviews with real East Texans about a period that covered much of the 20th century," Johnson said.

Johnson began teaching at SFA in 1966. In addition to the distinction of Regents Professor, Johnson was named distinguished professor by the SFA Alumni Association and professor emeritus.

In 2000, Johnson presented his research paper regarding the New London School explosion of 1937 at an international conference in England. He also has written three plays based on interviews with East Texas residents.

Johnson holds a master's in journalism and a Ph.D. in Western United States history from the University of Oklahoma. He received his bachelor's from Abilene Christian College.

The lecture begins 11 a.m. Feb. 7 in the Wright Music Building's Cole Concert Hall. There is no admission charge, and a light lunch will be served.
