NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Music that spans three centuries and is associated with Paris will be performed during "Un Soir à Paris," the third concert of Stephen F. Austin State University's Chamber Music in the Pines Festival, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 18, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

To open the concert, SFA faculty members Christina Guenther, flute; Jennifer Dalmas, violin; Evgeni Raychev, cello; and Ron Petti, harpsichord, will perform "Sexième Quatuor," the last of the six "Paris" quartets by Georg Phillip Telemann.

"Telemann wrote a lot of good chamber music, but the Paris quartets really show him at his best," Dalmas said. "They are full of wonderful melodies and amazing rhythmic quirks."

Guenther and Petti will perform Sonata for Flute and Piano by 20th century composer Francis Poulenc.

Written in 1957 for the world-renowned French flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, the work is dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, an American patron of chamber music, explained Guenther. "This beautiful sonata is one of Poulenc's best-known works and is a popular standard in the flute repertoire."

To close the concert, guest violist Melissa Lewis, faculty member at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla., will join Dalmas, Raychev and Petti in presenting Gabriel Faure's Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 15.

"This is arguably one of the greatest piano quartets written in the Romantic period," Dalmas said. "The piece has understandably become Faure's most popular chamber work, with its memorable lyrical melodies and rich, chromatic harmonies."

The Chamber Music in the Pines Festival will close with a 2:30 p.m. concert on Sunday, July 20, in Cole Concert Hall. "An Afternoon in London" will feature SFA woodwind and brass faculty musicians performing music associated with London.

The festival is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and is sponsored in part by Ed and Gwen Cole.

Tickets for each concert are $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors and $5 for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
